How to Install RAM in a Laptop: Step-by-Step Guide
Adding memory to a laptop is one of the easiest upgrades you can do yourself. It usually takes 10–15 minutes with a small screwdriver.
Before you start
- Check your laptop can be upgraded. Many thin laptops have soldered memory. Use our Memory Configurator or check the manufacturer's specifications.
- Buy the right type. Laptops use SODIMM modules: DDR3L, DDR4 or DDR5. See DDR4 vs DDR5 and DDR3 vs DDR3L.
- Back up your files and charge or unplug the laptop.
Step by step
- Shut down the laptop completely (not sleep), unplug the charger and, if possible, disconnect or remove the battery.
- Remove the bottom panel or the memory access cover. Keep the screws in order.
- Discharge static by touching an unpainted metal surface. Hold modules by their edges.
- Remove an old module (if replacing it) by gently pushing the two side clips outwards. The module pops up at an angle.
- Insert the new module at about a 30° angle, lining up the notch with the key in the slot, and push it fully into the slot.
- Press down until the side clips click into place.
- Refit the cover, reconnect the battery and power on. The laptop may take a little longer than usual to start the first time.
- Check the new total in Windows: Settings ? System ? About.
