Which USB Flash Drive Should I Buy? USB 3.2, USB-C and Encrypted Drives Explained
USB flash drives all look similar, but speed, connector and security vary a lot. Here is how to pick the right one.
1. Choose the connector
- USB-A fits most desktops and laptops.
- USB-C fits newer laptops, tablets and Android phones.
- Dual drives have both, so you can move files between a phone and a computer. Try the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go 64GB.
2. Choose the speed
USB 3.2 Gen 1 (also called USB 3.0) is several times faster than USB 2.0 and is the sensible minimum today. If you move large video files or backups, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive such as the TEAMGROUP X1 MAX 512GB gives SSD-class speed in a stick.
3. Choose the capacity
- 32GB: documents, school work, presentations – Kingston DataTraveler Exodia 32GB or DataTraveler Exodia M 32GB
- 64–128GB: photos, music, installers – DataTraveler Exodia M 64GB, 128GB
- 256GB+: video and backups
4. Do you need encryption?
If the drive will hold personal or business data, choose a hardware-encrypted drive. If it is lost, the data cannot be read without the password or fingerprint. Options include the Lexar JumpDrive F35 PRO fingerprint drive and the Kingston IronKey Keypad 200, which has a built-in PIN pad and is FIPS-certified.
